Why Healing Isn’t Linear

The spiral is part of the path. It always has been.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of us picked up the idea that healing is supposed to move in one direction. You do the work, you gain the insight, something shifts, and you do not go back to who you were before. Progress is progress. Anything that looks like going backward is failure.

I spent years measuring myself against that version of healing and coming up short every time.

The truth is that real healing does not move in a straight line. It spirals. You come back to the same wound, the same fear, the same pattern, but you come back to it differently than you did the last time. From a different angle. With more understanding. More capacity. It feels like going in circles. It is not. You are not in the same place. You just cannot always see that from inside it.

What it actually feels like when you are in it

You have a stretch of time where things feel genuinely lighter. You respond to things instead of reacting. You feel present in a way you have not felt in a while. You start to think you have actually turned a corner this time.

And then something happens. A stressor. A loss. A conversation that hit an old nerve. Suddenly you are back in patterns you thought you had left, feeling things you thought you were done with, replaying conversations from years ago like they are happening right now.

The voice in your head says: see? You have not changed at all.

That voice is not telling you the truth.

What is actually happening

Healing changes your baseline. It does not eliminate your triggers. When you are under enough stress, with the wrong combination of circumstances and a nervous system that is already running low, most people will slip into older ways of coping. That is not you failing. That is your system defaulting to what it already knows when its resources are stretched.

The real measure of how far you have come is not whether you ever return to those familiar dark places. It is how long you stay there. How quickly you notice. How much self-compassion you can offer yourself when it happens instead of piling shame on top of pain. How much faster you find your way back to yourself than you used to.

If any of that has changed, even a little, you have moved. Even if it does not feel like it right now.

One hard week is not the whole story. One hard season is not the whole story. The spiral is part of the path. It always has been.
