Everyone is stressed sometimes. Dysregulation is different: your body stays in alarm or shutdown long after the demand has passed. Here are seven signs, especially common in mothers. For a deeper look at the survival-mode version, see signs your nervous system is stuck in survival mode.
1. You startle or tense at small things
A dropped cup, a sudden question, or a notification makes your whole body jump. Your threat detector is set too sensitive.
2. You are exhausted but cannot rest
You collapse into bed and your mind races, or you wake at 3am alert. Tired and wired is a classic sign.
3. Your reactions feel bigger than the moment
Spilled milk becomes rage or tears. Afterward you wonder where that came from. It came from a body with no buffer left.
4. You go numb or foggy
Flatness, forgetfulness, and disconnection are your system protecting you by turning the volume down.
5. Your body keeps complaining
Tight jaw, shallow breathing, headaches, stomach trouble, and tight shoulders often show up when stress has nowhere to go.
6. Touch and noise feel like too much
If being touched by your own children makes you want to crawl out of your skin, that is overstimulation, not a lack of love.
7. You cannot enjoy the good moments
Even calm time feels tense, as if something is about to go wrong. Safety does not register because your system expects danger.
Stress versus dysregulation
Stress eases when the situation does. Dysregulation lingers. If these signs are your normal week, support your body instead of pushing harder.
Where to start
Begin with one small action: a long exhale, feet on the floor, a glass of water. Then read the guide to nervous system regulation for mothers and try the 5-minute resets.
